Season Review
Buffalo Bills 1995
After a jarring plunge into mediocrity the previous year, the 1995 Buffalo Bills proved the reports of their demise were slightly premature. The front office aggressively re-tooled a tired roster, drafting immediate contributors like offensive lineman Ruben Brown and snagging high-impact free agents like Bryce Paup and Ted Washington to anchor the front seven. The revitalization worked perfectly as head coach Marv Levy navigated the squad to a 10-6 regular-season record and reclaimed the AFC East crown. They shook off a sluggish start and rallied to capture the division, proving the championship core still had one last deep playoff push in their system.
The offensive identity shifted slightly as age began catching up to the K-Gun, finishing 13th in points scored with 350 (21.9 per game) and 20th in total yards. Quarterback Jim Kelly fought through his age-35 season to throw for 3,130 yards and 22 touchdowns against 13 interceptions. With Andre Reed sidelined for most of the campaign, appearing in only six games, veteran Bill Brooks stepped up as the top target, pulling down 53 catches for 763 yards and 11 touchdowns. The ground game remained the bedrock of the attack, with Thurman Thomas grinding out 1,005 rushing yards splitting time with Darick Holmes who rushed for 698 yards.
Buffalo’s resurgence was largely fueled by a revamped defense that finished 12th in points allowed by conceding 335 (20.9 ppg). Free-agent acquisition Bryce Paup became the steal of the decade, transforming into an absolute wrecking ball. Paup racked up an absurd 17.5 sacks, capturing the Defensive Player of the Year award and earning First-Team All-Pro honors. His dominance freed up Bruce Smith to continue in his own elite ways, logging 10.5 sacks and joining Paup as a First-Team All-Pro. With Phil Hansen adding 10.0 sacks and Cornelius Bennett cleaning up the middle with 104 combined tackles, the Bills front seven was a nightmare for opposing offensive lines.
The season was defined by a resilience that had been missing the previous year. After an ugly 22-7 primetime thumping by the Broncos in Week 1, the Bills ripped off five straight wins. They proved their mettle in tight divisional battles, completing gritty sweeps over both the Colts and the Jets. The pivotal moment of the campaign arrived in Week 16 against the rival Dolphins. Clinging to divisional hopes, Buffalo secured a tense 23-20 victory over Miami, locking up the AFC East and establishing psychological dominance over their long-time nemesis heading into January.
That regular-season finale set the stage for an immediate rematch, and Buffalo humiliated Miami 37-22 in the Wild Card round, rolling up an incredible 341 rushing yards. However, the magic ran out in the Divisional round, as the Bills walked into a buzzsaw and fell 40-21 to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ultimately, the 1995 season stands as a proud, defiant gasp from an aging dynasty. Driven by Paup’s historic defensive campaign and Kelly’s sheer will, this squad reminded the league exactly why the Bills ruled the early 90s, even if they fell short of a fifth Super Bowl appearance.
