Season Review
Buffalo Bills 2002
The 2001 Bills were a 3-13 disaster, so the front office swung for the fences in 2002. Enter Drew Bledsoe. Traded within the division after losing his job to Tom Brady, Bledsoe arrived in Western New York with a massive chip on his shoulder. Coupled with the high-profile free-agent signing of tackling machine London Fletcher and the drafting of massive offensive tackle Mike Williams, head coach Gregg Williams suddenly had a roster loaded with firepower. The result was a wildly entertaining 8-8 campaign that dragged the Bills out of the NFL basement, even if their porous defense relegated them to a fourth-place finish in a brutal AFC East.
Offensively, the Bills transformed from an unwatchable slog into box-office television. Bledsoe unleashed a spectacular revenge tour, throwing for a staggering 4,359 yards and 24 touchdowns to earn a Pro Bowl nod. He was flanked by arguably the most dangerous receiving tandem in the league: Eric Moulds hauled in 100 catches for 1,292 yards and 10 scores, while Peerless Price stretched the field for 1,252 yards and nine touchdowns. The aerial assault opened up massive running lanes for second-year back Travis Henry. The bruising runner exploded for 1,438 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 325 carries. This high-octane unit finished 11th in scoring with 379 points (23.7 ppg), proving the Bills could shoot it out with anybody.
Unfortunately, while the offense was busy lighting up the scoreboard, the defense was bleeding points at an alarming rate. Buffalo plummeted to 27th in scoring defense, surrendering 397 points - 24.8 ppg - and frequently forcing Bledsoe into desperate track meets. The prized offseason acquisition, London Fletcher, did everything in his power to hold the middle together, registering an absurd 149 combined tackles. On the edge, Aaron Schobel emerged as a legitimate building block with a team-high 8.5 sacks, while sophomore cornerback Nate Clements evolved into a premier playmaker, snatching six interceptions. Despite these individual heroics, the unit as a whole simply could not generate critical stops when the game was on the line.
The season was a chaotic rollercoaster of dramatic swings and heartbreaking letdowns. Buffalo set the tone early in a Week 2 overtime classic against the Vikings, winning 45-39 in a game that announced their offensive arrival. They routinely tortured the Dolphins, capturing both matchups, including a 38-21 thrashing in Week 13. However, Bledsoe's quest for ultimate revenge against his former employer fell completely flat. Bill Belichick's Patriots outclassed Buffalo twice, handing them a 38-7 humiliation in November and a 27-17 defeat in December. Whenever the Bills crept above the .500 mark, the defense inevitably collapsed, preventing any serious momentum.
Ultimately, the 2002 campaign is remembered as one of the most statistically thrilling, yet hollow, seasons in Buffalo history. Bledsoe, Henry, and Moulds all earned trips to the Pro Bowl, cementing this as one of the most explosive offenses to never sniff the playoffs. The 8-8 record was a five-win improvement over the previous nightmare, but it merely served as a cruel tease. The organization proved they had the star power to sell tickets and break records, but their inability to build a balanced, complementary football team kept the playoff window firmly shut.
