Season Review
Indianapolis Colts 2015
The 2015 Indianapolis Colts entered the season wrapped in Super Bowl expectations after an AFC Championship Game appearance the previous year. Looking to push over the top, the front office made aggressive offseason splashes by signing veteran weapons Frank Gore and Andre Johnson, alongside defensive additions Kendall Langford and Trent Cole. However, the grand plan derailed almost immediately as injuries and inconsistency turned a promising campaign into a grueling fight for survival under head coach Chuck Pagano. Indianapolis ultimately finished with an 8-8 record, placing second in a weak AFC South but missing the postseason landscape.
Injuries shattered any hope of offensive continuity, with the unit plunging to 24th in points scored (20.8 ppg) and 28th in total yards. Franchise quarterback Andrew Luck battled through a nightmare, limited to just seven games due to a lacerated kidney and torn abdominal muscle, throwing 15 touchdowns against 12 costly interceptions. In his absence, 40-year-old backup Matt Hasselbeck kept the season alive by starting eight games, delivering nine touchdowns and a gutsy 5-3 record. Despite the chaotic carousel under center, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton remained a consistent threat, catching 69 passes for 1,124 yards and five touchdowns, while Gore grinded out 967 yards on 260 carries to anchor a pass-heavy offense forced into survival mode.
The defense fared little better, ranking 25th in points allowed (25.5 ppg) and 26th in total yards. Still, the unit survived on a bend-but-don't-break mentality, generating 25 turnovers and finding a pass-rush spark in veteran linebacker Robert Mathis and newly signed defensive end Kendall Langford, who each logged 7.0 sacks. The true backbone of the defense sat in the secondary and middle linebacker spots. D'Qwell Jackson compiled an astounding 150 combined tackles, safety Mike Adams snagged five interceptions, and cornerback Vontae Davis locked down perimeter options on his way to 16 passes defended.
Indy’s season was a roller coaster defined by early adversity and a baffling midseason identity crisis. After stumbling to an 0-2 start against the Bills and Jets, the Colts stabilized with three consecutive divisional victories. The low point came in Week 6 with a heartbreaking 34-27 loss to the rival Patriots, featuring the infamous failed fourth-down fake punt that became an internet meme. Yet, the team’s crowning moment arrived in Week 9 when Luck outworked the eventual Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos in a 27-24 upset, though the victory proved pyrrhic as Luck suffered his season-ending internal injuries during the contest.
Missing the playoffs for the first time since 2011, the legacy of the 2015 squad is defined as an era of missed opportunities and quarterback vulnerability. Five players salvaged individual recognition by making the Pro Bowl, including Hilton, Adams, Davis, Jackson, and special teams ace Mike Adams. Legendary kicker Adam Vinatieri defied father time at age 43, connecting on 25 of 27 field goals for a stellar 92.6% accuracy rate. While the season ended without a playoff banner, it remains a testament to the grit of a roster that fought to a .500 record despite cycling through five different quarterbacks.
