Season Review
Indianapolis Colts 2001
The 2001 Indianapolis Colts entered the season with legitimate championship aspirations under head coach Jim Mora. Coming off a ten-win campaign, expectations were sky-high, boosted by the addition of draft picks like wide receiver Reggie Wayne and tackle Ryan Diem, alongside rookie free agent Dominic Rhodes. Instead, the season imploded into a 6-10 nightmare, landing them a dismal fourth place in the AFC East and completely missing the postseason.
The tragedy of this season is that the offense remained a shiny new Ferrari. Indianapolis ranked second in the league in both points scored with 413 (25.8 ppg) and total yards with 5,955. Peyton Manning threw for 4,131 yards and 26 touchdowns, though his 23 interceptions proved costly. When superstar running back Edgerrin James suffered a season-ending knee injury after six games, rookie Dominic Rhodes stepped up spectacularly, rushing for 1,104 yards at an impressive 4.7 yards per attempt. Meanwhile, Marvin Harrison was virtually unstoppable, catching 109 passes for 1,524 yards and 15 touchdowns, while tight end Marcus Pollard added eight scores.
But if the offense was a Ferrari, the defense was a totaled Pinto. The Colts surrendered a horrific 486 points (30.4 ppg), ranking 31st in the NFL, and allowed 5,715 yards to finish 29th. Despite solid individual efforts from linebacker Rob Morris, who racked up 114 combined tackles, and pass rushers Chad Bratzke with 8.5 sacks and Marcus Washington with 8.0, the unit could not stop a leaky faucet. They ranked dead last in percentage (41.5%) of drives ending in an opponent score, consistently undermining their high-powered offense.
The turning point arrived early during a brutal stretch against their division rivals. After a promising 2-0 start, the Colts were dismantled 44-13 by the New England Patriots in Week 3, sparking a disastrous midseason tailspin where they dropped eight of ten games. The low point came in December with a humiliating 41-6 Monday Night Football loss to the Miami Dolphins. A late 41-27 shootout win over Atlanta briefly halted the bleeding, but a subsequent collapse against the Jets ensured a losing season.
Missing the playoffs, this doomed campaign triggered a massive franchise pivot, culminating in Moraβs termination. The legacy of the 2001 Colts is defined by individual excellence overshadowed by defensive incompetence. Harrison earned Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors, and Rhodes finished fifth in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting. Ultimately, this team proved that even a historically elite offense cannot survive a defense that refuses to tackle anyone.
