Season Review
Indianapolis Colts 1996
Following their breathtaking run to the 1995 AFC Championship Game, the 1996 Indianapolis Colts entered the season with elevated expectations and a new chief in command, as Lindy Infante replaced Ted Marchibroda as head coach. The team also injected future Hall of Fame talent into the roster by drafting wide receiver Marvin Harrison and signing legendary pass rusher Richard Dent. Despite navigating a highly volatile campaign, the Colts managed a 9-7 regular season record, securing a third-place finish in the competitive AFC East division. This mark was just enough to sneak back into the postseason as a wild-card participant, keeping the franchise in the championship conversation for consecutive years.
On the offensive side of the ball, quarterback Jim Harbaugh could not quite replicate his previous years magic, compiling 2,630 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions across 14 starts. The offensive machine operated with a mostly balanced approach, though star running back Marshall Faulk struggled to find room behind a porous line, managing only 587 rushing yards at a meager 3.0 yards per carry. Despite those rushing inefficiencies, the aerial attack found a true spark in the rookie Harrison, who led the team with 64 receptions, 836 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns alongside veteran Sean Dawkins who added 751 yards receiving. Collectively, the Indianapolis offense finished near the league middle, ranking 16th in points scored (19.8 ppg) and a disappointing 25th in total yards.
Defensively, the unit kept the team afloat despite surrendering yards in chunks, wrapping up the year ranked 18th in points allowed (20.9 ppg) and 22nd in total defensive yardage. Defensive end Tony Bennett spearheaded the pass rush with 6.0 sacks, while the veteran addition of Dent chipped in an extra 6.5 sacks from the edge. In the back seven, safety Jason Belser anchored the secondary with 96 total tackles and four interceptions, returning two of them for scores, while cornerback Ray Buchanan provided coverage stability. This bend-but-don-t-break defensive philosophy relied heavily on forcing timely mistakes to counteract their struggles against both the run and deep pass.
The season itself was a definitive tale of two halves, exploding out of the gate with a 4-0 start that included a dramatic 25-24 win over the defending champion Dallas Cowboys. However, a post-bye week collapse saw Indianapolis drop five of their next six contests, punctuated by a lopsided 37-13 defeat at the hands of the divisional rival Miami Dolphins. Standing at a precarious 5-5, Infante's squad righted the ship just in time by stringing together a crucial three-game winning streak in December, highlighted by a 24-19 road triumph over the Kansas City Chiefs that essentially locked up their playoff berth.
The postseason journey was short-lived, as the Colts ran into a buzzsaw in the Wild Card round, suffering a demoralizing 42-14 blowout loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Harbaugh was completely smothered, throwing for just 134 yards, while the defense surrendered a catastrophic 231 rushing yards to the Steelers ground game. While the exit was ugly, the 1996 squad holds a distinct place in franchise lore, serving as the bridge between the gritty era of the mid-90s and the explosive offensive dynasties that would follow soon after. Notably, kicker Cary Blanchard and punter Chris Gardocki both earned first-team All-Pro honors, capping a year where special teams frequently saved the day.
