Season Review
Oakland Raiders 2002
The 2002 Oakland Raiders season was a high-stakes chess match orchestrated by Al Davis, who aggressively loaded up for a championship run after trading away mastermind Jon Gruden to Tampa Bay. Rookie head coach Bill Callahan inherited a veteran-heavy locker room bolstered by key free-agent signings like legendary safety Rod Woodson, linebacker Bill Romanowski, and massive defensive tackles Sam Adams and John Parrella. Expectations were sky-high, and the silver and black delivered a dominant 11-5 regular season to capture the AFC West crown. Despite the heavy mileage on their veteran roster, Oakland stormed through the AFC bracket to secure a spot in Super Bowl XXXVII, setting up a cinematic showdown against their former coach.
Callahan leaned heavily into a high-powered, pass-happy offense that led the NFL with 6,237 total yards and ranked second with 450 points scored (28.1 ppg). At the center of the surgical attack was 37-year-old quarterback Rich Gannon, who completed 67.6 percent of his passes for a league-high 4,689 yards and 26 touchdowns. Gannon spread the rock beautifully between 40-year-old ageless wonder Jerry Rice, who tallied 1,211 receiving yards, and 36-year-old Tim Brown, who added 930 yards. Out of the backfield, Charlie Garner served as the ultimate dual-threat weapon, leading the rushing attack with 962 yards while operating as a high-volume outlet with 91 receptions for an additional 941 yards.
Defensively, the Raiders paired an opportunistic secondary with a stout interior front, finishing sixth in the league by allowing just 304 points (19.0 ppg). 37 year old Rod Woodson lead the back end with an elite vintage performance, leading the squad with eight interceptions and returning two for touchdowns. Up front, defensive tackle Roderick Coleman provided a relentless interior push to rack up a team-high 11.0 sacks, while linebacker Eric Barton paced the defense with 127 combined tackles. Oakland excelled at taking the football away, forcing 31 turnovers during the regular season, while the defensive front choked out opposing ground games to finish third in rushing yards allowed.
An electric 4-0 start was highlighted by an absolute offensive explosion against the Tennessee Titans in Week 4, a 52-25 shellacking where the Raiders racked up 464 total yards. However, the seasoned roster hit a midseason wall, enduring a brutal four-game losing streak that included back-to-back overtime heartbreakers against divisional rival San Diego and cross-bay foe San Francisco. The true turning point arrived on a Monday night in Denver during Week 10, where a decisive 34-10 routing of the Broncos sparked a furious late-season surge. Oakland won seven of their final eight games, punctuated by a 24-0 shutout of the Kansas City Chiefs to lock up the division.
In the postseason, the top-seeded Raiders dismantled the New York Jets 30-10 before outlasting the Titans 41-24 in the AFC Championship game to punch their ticket to San Diego. The peak of the Al Davis era quickly dissolved into tragedy in Super Bowl XXXVII, where Grudenโs Tampa Bay Buccaneers anticipated every schematic wrinkle, intercepting Gannon five times in a painful 48-21 blowout. Rich Gannon took home NFL MVP honors, and Rice and Woodson proved that greatness has no expiration date, but this season remains forever defined as the spectacular, heartbreaking final curtain call of the great modern Raiders franchise.
