Season Review

Carolina Panthers 2021

The 2021 Carolina Panthers season was a classic NFL tale of fool’s gold and quarterback desperation. Entering Matt Rhule’s second year with an overhauled roster, expectations were cautiously optimistic following an offseason trade that shipped away draft capital for former New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold. Along with additions like offensive linemen Pat Elflein and Cam Erving, plus defensive tackle DaQuan Jones, the Panthers aimed to construct a legitimate playoff contender in the NFC South. The season initially looked like they were on course when they sprinted out to a 3-0 start, fueled by an aggressive defense and high hopes. However, a catastrophic mixture of key injuries, offensive line ineptitude, and poor quarterback play completely cratered the season. Carolina lost 12 of their final 14 games to finish an abysmal 5-12, good for dead last in the NFC South and entirely alienating a frustrated fanbase.

Offensively, the Panthers were an unmitigated disaster, ranking 29th in points scored with 304 (17.9 ppg) and 30th in total yards with 5,081. The master plan of resurrecting Sam Darnold’s career blew up spectacularly as the young signal-caller threw for just 2,527 yards, 9 touchdowns, and a staggering 13 interceptions across 12 games. Carolina’s offensive scheme was severely handcuffed by the loss of superstar running back Christian McCaffrey, who was limited to just 7 games due to injury but still racked up 785 yards from scrimmage. In his absence, rookie Chuba Hubbard, drafted in the fourth round, fought valiantly to pick up the pieces, managing 612 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns. The lone bright spot on this entire side of the ball was wideout D.J. Moore, who put together an incredibly resilient campaign with 93 receptions for 1,157 yards and 4 touchdowns despite catchable targets being a luxury.

While the offense spent four months stepping on its own toes, Phil Snow’s defense actually built a legitimate identity. The Panthers finished 2nd in the NFL in total yards allowed and 4th in passing yards allowed, making life hell for opposing quarterbacks for large stretches of the year. Edge rusher Brian Burns led the charge up front with 9.0 sacks and 18 quarterback hits, earning Pro Bowl honors for his relentless pursuit off the edge. Free-agent acquisition Haason Reddick proved to be an absolute steal, leading the team with 11.0 sacks and 12 tackles for loss. In the secondary, versatile safety Jeremy Chinn led the roster with 107 combined tackles, flying all over the field to protect a back-end that added veterans like Stephon Gilmore and C.J. Henderson during the season after top draft pick Jaycee Horn suffered a broken foot just three weeks into his rookie year.

If you want to pin down the exact moment the season disintegrated, it happened in Week 4 against the Dallas Cowboys. Coming off a pristine 3-0 start, the Panthers gave up 36 points to Dallas, sparking a miserable four-game losing streak that exposed the team’s lack of depth. A temporary reprieve arrived in Week 10 with a stunning 34-10 blowout of the Arizona Cardinals, a game that featured the highly publicized, emotional return of franchise icon Cam Newton. Newton accounted for two early touchdowns, screaming ‘I’m back!’ to the crowd, but the good vibes evaporated instantly. That victory would remarkably be Carolina’s final win of the year. The Panthers collapsed into a season-ending seven-game losing streak, getting completely thoroughly outclassed by division rivals like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who hammered them 32-6 and 41-17 down the stretch.

Because of their late-season surrender, the Panthers naturally missed the postseason, leaving the franchise in complete gridlock. Newton’s nostalgia tour finished an empty 0-5 as a starter, throwing 5 interceptions to just 4 touchdowns, while P.J. Walker’s lone start didn’t offer much long-term hope either. This 2021 squad will go down in franchise lore as the team that proved a great defense cannot save an offense that turns the ball over 29 times and ranks last in yards per pass attempt. No major awards came back to Charlotte outside of Pro Bowl nods for Burns and Gilmore. The season solidified the fact that the Matt Rhule era was completely off the tracks, setting the stage for more quarterback carousel madness in the Carolinas.
