The front office made history by drafting all defensive players, anchoring the middle with first-round defensive tackle Derrick Brown, who logged eight tackles for loss. Edge rusher Brian Burns took a massive leap forward, terrorizing quarterbacks to the tune of a team-leading 9.0 sacks. The real revelation, however, was rookie linebacker Jeremy Chinn. Ater starting 0-2, the Panthers reeled off three straight wins, including a gritty 21-16 road upset against the Los Angeles Chargers and a 31-21 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Then the team fell into a rut. Carolina endured a painful five-game losing streak, highlighted by a 33-31 heartbreaker to the Kansas City Chiefs where a late field goal fell short. They briefly snapped the skid with a 20-0 shutout of the Detroit Lions but closed out the year losing four of their final five games.

Missing the playoffs was inevitable for a transitioning roster, but this team left a fascinating statistical legacy. The 2020 Panthers became just the fifth team in the Super Bowl era to feature four players with over 1,000 scrimmage yards in the same season: Moore, Anderson, Curtis Samuel, and Davis. Jeremy Chinn finished a close runner-up for AP Defensive Rookie of the Year. It wasn’t a masterpiece, but it gave Carolina fans hope that the post-Cam blueprint could actually work.
