The peak of the year came in late October during an unbelievable 54-34 track meet victory over the defending Super Bowl champion St. Louis Rams, followed by a gritty division win against Seattle. Then the wheels completely fell off, as Kansas City suffered a miserable five-game losing streak through November and early December. The absolute backbreaker was a 17-16 defeat against a rival San Diego Chargers team that ended up winning only one game all year. By the time Grbac rallied the team for a couple of late-December wins against Carolina and Denver, the playoff ship had already sailed.

Missing out on January football was a tough pill to swallow, but this roster still holds a fascinating place in franchise lore. Tony Gonzalez officially solidified himself as a first-team All-Pro superstar and the gold standard for the modern tight end position, while offensive lineman Will Shields also secured another well-deserved Pro Bowl selection. Rookie draft picks Greg Wesley and Dante Hall also flashed the talent that would define the next era of Chiefs football.
