Season Review
Kansas City Chiefs 1999
The 1999 Kansas City Chiefs entered a new era, closing the Marty Schottenheimer chapter and promoting defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham to head coach. Tasked with keeping the Chiefs relevant in a strong AFC West, Cunningham steered the squad to a 9-7 record, finishing second in the division. Offseason acquisitions like linebacker Marvcus Patton and defensive back Carlton Gray added veteran grit, while first-round tackle John Tait protected the future. Arrowhead carried high expectations, but the transition was rocky. Despite mounting a furious late-season playoff push, the campaign ended in heartbreak, leaving Kansas City just outside the postseason picture.
The Chiefs offense was a balanced scoring machine, finishing eighth in the NFL with 390 points (24.4 ppg) and ranking 12th in total yards. Quarterback Elvis Grbac started all 16 games, throwing for 3,389 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions for an 81.7 rating. His top target was third-year tight end Tony Gonzalez, who became an elite weapon with 76 catches for 849 yards and 11 scores. Derrick Alexander added 832 receiving yards, while Donnell Bennett led the ground game with eight touchdowns. Crucially, the unit protected the ball well, ranking sixth-best in the league with only 24 turnovers.
Cunningham's defense was an opportunistic group that thrived on pure chaos. While ranking 13th in points allowed (20.1 ppg) and 14th in yards, they finished second in the NFL by forcing an amazing 45 turnovers. The secondary was lethal; cornerback James Hasty nabbed seven interceptions, while Cris Dishman and linebacker Donnie Edwards each added five. Edwards also led the team with 123 tackles. Pass rusher Derrick Thomas anchored the front seven with seven sacks, while Patton added 6.5. This defense specialized in taking the ball away, consistently giving Grbac short fields.
The regular season was a rollercoaster. After an uneven 2-2 start, the Chiefs found life with a dominant 35-8 dismantling of the Ravens followed by a 34-0 shutout of rival San Diego in October. A midseason slump followed, as a three-game November skid dropped the team to a mediocre 5-5 record. Kansas City rallied with a clutch four-game winning streak, featuring a wild 37-34 shootout victory over Oakland and a 31-28 triumph against Minnesota. Sitting at 9-5, the postseason was within reach, but a costly Week 16 loss to Seattle set up a dramatic finale.
The finale against the Raiders ended in a devastating 41-38 overtime loss, officially knocking the Chiefs out of the postseason. Despite the disappointment, the 1999 season holds historical significance. It marked the true arrival of Tony Gonzalez as a first-team All-Pro superstar. Lineman Will Shields and James Hasty also earned Pro Bowl nods. Tragically, this was the final season for iconic linebacker Derrick Thomas, who passed away after a car accident shortly after the season concluded, leaving an indelible legacy in Kansas City.
