Season Review
Cincinnati Bengals 2018
The 2018 Cincinnati Bengals entered the year in a strange purgatory after owner Mike Brown gave coach Marvin Lewis a shocking two-year extension. To try and salvage the era, the front office acquired tackle Cordy Glenn, signed linebacker Preston Brown, and drafted rookies Jessie Bates III and Sam Hubbard. Optimism peaked during an electric 4-1 start, but systemic defensive flaws and crucial injuries quickly derailed the campaign. Cincinnati collapsed to a 6-10 record, finishing last in the AFC North and missing the playoffs. It became the unceremonious end to Lewis’s 16-year tenure, closing a definitive chapter in franchise history.
Coordinator Bill Lazor’s offense ranked 17th in scoring with 368 points, at 23.0 points per game, but collapsed to 26th in yards. Quarterback Andy Dalton threw for 2,566 yards and 21 touchdowns before a thumb injury ended his year, forcing backup Jeff Driskel into action. Despite the instability, running back Joe Mixon flourished, leading the AFC with 1,168 rushing yards and eight scores. When a toe injury sidelined star wideout A.J. Green after 694 yards, Tyler Boyd enjoyed a breakout 1,028-yard season, while speedster John Ross added a bizarrely efficient seven touchdowns on just 21 catches, keeping the passing game watchable.
Defensively, the Bengals were a disaster, ranking 30th in points allowed - conceding 28.4 points per game - and dead last in yards surrendered. This horrific unit led to defensive coordinator Teryl Austin’s mid-season firing, forcing Lewis to take over play-calling. Amid the wreckage, tackle Geno Atkins remained elite, earning a Pro Bowl selection with 10.0 sacks alongside Carlos Dunlap’s 8.0 sacks. The silver lining belonged to the rookies; safety Jessie Bates III notched a team-high 111 tackles and three interceptions, while defensive end Sam Hubbard added 6.0 sacks, providing a glimmer of hope for an otherwise abysmal defensive group.
The season swung on a dramatic turning point in Week 6 against the rival Pittsburgh Steelers. Sitting at 4-1 after high-scoring victories over Baltimore and Atlanta, the Bengals surrendered a heartbreaking, final-minute touchdown to lose 28-21, fracturing their confidence. The post-bye schedule brought total collapse, highlighted by a humiliating 51-14 home shellacking by New Orleans. Dalton’s thumb injury against Cleveland two weeks later sealed their fate, sparking a dismal slide where Cincinnati dropped seven of eight games, thoroughly erasing their hot start and eliminating any lingering postseason hopes.
Finishing 6-10 meant another missed postseason and the long-awaited termination of Marvin Lewis. Historically, the 2018 season is defined as the final, exhausted gasp of a regime that had overstayed its welcome. Though remembered for defensive futility and fan apathy, this painful transition campaign holds sneaky significance. The star turns from Mixon, Boyd, and Bates established the indispensable young nucleus that would eventually help the franchise rebuild toward a Super Bowl run. It was a bleak end to an era, but a necessary bridge to the team’s modern revival.
