Season Review
Cincinnati Bengals 2015
The 2015 Cincinnati Bengals entered the season under pressure, looking to break a maddening streak of four consecutive first-round playoff exits under head coach Marvin Lewis. Offseason adjustments were subtle but intentional, highlighted by bringing back defensive end Michael Johnson and signing veteran linebacker A.J. Hawk to steady the front seven. On the field, everything clicked into place during a blistering 8-0 start, matching the best opening stretch in franchise history. Cincinnati ultimately finished with a 12-4 regular season record to capture the AFC North division crown. It felt like the year the franchise would finally break through its postseason ceiling, establishing them as legitimate Super Bowl contenders in a loaded AFC field.
Hue Jackson orchestrated a beautifully balanced West Coast offense that finished seventh in the league in scoring by putting up 419 points (26.2 ppg). Quarterback Andy Dalton enjoyed a career-best campaign, throwing for 3,250 yards, 25 touchdowns, and just 7 interceptions, while posting an incredibly efficient 7.7 net yards per pass attempt. The aerial attack weaponized elite wide receiver A.J. Green, who pulled down 86 receptions for 1,297 yards and 10 touchdowns, alongside breakout tight end Tyler Eifert, who caught a staggering 13 touchdowns. The ground game was a two-headed monster and relied on the bruising style of Jeremy Hill, who paced the rushing attack with 794 yards and 11 touchdowns and Giovani Bernard who gained 730 yards. They operate behind an elite offensive line anchored by All-Pro left tackle Andrew Whitworth.
Defensive coordinator Paul Guenther deployed a suffocating 4-3 alignment that allowed only 279 points (17.4 ppg), ranking second in the NFL in scoring defense. The engine of this unit was a ferocious pass rush spearheaded by left defensive end Carlos Dunlap, who logged a career-high 13.5 sacks, and first-team All-Pro defensive tackle Geno Atkins, who contributed 11.0 sacks. In the secondary, free safety Reggie Nelson had a spectacular, ball-hawking campaign, tying for the league lead with 8 interceptions. Backed by the physical presence of linebackers Vincent Rey, Rey Maualuga and Vontaze Burfict, this defense specialized in taking away the deep ball and forcing turnovers, securing 21 regular season interceptions and helping the team finish sixth in total takeaways.
The defining game of the season came in October when the Bengals rallied from a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to stun the defending NFC champion Seattle Seahawks 27-24 in overtime. A Thursday night blowout of the Cleveland Browns moved the team to 8-0 before a prime-time slip-up against the Houston Texans delivered their first loss. The true turning point of the season occurred in Week 14 against the rival Pittsburgh Steelers, when Dalton fractured his thumb while attempting to make a tackle after throwing an interception. The injury forced backup quarterback A.J. McCarron into action for the remainder of the regular season, testing the team’s depth during a critical stretch that included a tough 20-17 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos.
Without a healthy Dalton, the postseason ended in the most heartbreaking fashion imaginable during an 18-16 Wild Card loss to the Steelers, marked by costly late-game penalties and a lost fumble. Though the season ended in familiar disappointment, individual accolades validated the team’s elite talent as Whitworth, Atkins, Green, Dunlap, Nelson, and Adam Jones all earned Pro Bowl honors. Historically, this squad remains one of the most complete and talented rosters the city of Cincinnati has seen in the salary-cap era. It represents the absolute absolute peak of the Marvin Lewis era, leaving fans to forever wonder how far this group could have gone had their starting quarterback remained healthy for the playoff run.
