Season Review
Chicago Bears 2006
The 2006 Chicago Bears entered the season wrapped in a familiar blueprint: ride a historic defense, hide the quarterback, and let Lovie Smith steer the ship. After a solid division title the year prior, general manager Jerry Angelo mostly stayed the course in the offseason, leaning on continuity while making a gamble in the second round of the draft by selecting Miami cornerback Devin Hester. The formula clicked into a dominant 13-3 regular season record to secure the top spot in the NFC North and home-field advantage throughout the conference playoffs. While the city dreamed of a vintage 1985 revival, the journey ended with a bittersweet trip to Miami, where they ultimately fell short of the ultimate prize in a rainy Super Bowl showdown.
Offensively, the Bears operated a volatile West Coast scheme that finished 2nd in the league in scoring at 26.7 points per game but hovered at 15th in total yards. The entire unit revolved around the maddening enigma of Rex Grossman, who started all 16 games and finished with 3,193 passing yards and 23 touchdowns. Grossman was the ultimate Jekyll and Hyde, pairing explosive deep balls with a horrific 20 interceptions and five lost fumbles. To offset his erratic nature, offensive coordinator Ron Turner relied heavily on a balanced ground game led by Thomas Jones, who grinded out 1,210 rushing yards, and Cedric Benson, who added 647 yards. Wide receivers Muhsin Muhammad and Bernard Berrian provided the downfield threat, combining for over 1,800 receiving yards to keep opposing secondaries honest.
While the offense rode a weekly roller coaster, the defense remained an absolute powerhouse under coordinator Ron Rivera, ranking 3rd in points allowed at 15.9 per game and 5th in total yards. Middle linebacker Brian Urlacher took home First-team All-Pro honors alongside his partner in crime Lance Briggs, suffocating opposing run games to the tune of just 99.4 yards per game. Up front, tackle Tommie Harris collapsed pockets from the interior until a late-season injury sidelined him, while rookie defensive end Mark Anderson emerged from obscurity to lead the roster with 12 sacks. The secondary was equally opportunistic, as cornerbacks Charles Tillman and Ricky Manning Jr. snagged five interceptions each, powering a defensive unit that forced a staggering 44 total turnovers.
The defining stretch of the season came during a blistering 7-0 start, highlighted by an unforgettable Week 6 Monday Night Football comeback against the Arizona Cardinals. Despite Grossman committing six turnovers and the offense gaining a pathetic 168 total yards, the defense and special teams scored three unanswered touchdowns to escape with a 24-23 victory, prompting Dennis Green's infamous 'they are who we thought they were' press conference. The undefeated streak finally snapped in Week 9 with a 31-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins, exposing the team's vulnerability when forced to play from behind. Another notable bump occurred in late November during a 17-13 defeat against the New England Patriots, where Grossman threw three picks, fueling a late-season collapse in his efficiency.
In the postseason, the Bears outlasted the Seattle Seahawks 27-24 in an overtime divisional thriller before stomping the New Orleans Saints 39-14 in a snowy NFC Championship game at Soldier Field. That set up a historic Super Bowl XLI matchup against Peyton Manning's Indianapolis Colts. Although Devin Hester injected instant electric shock into the game by returning the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, the Bears succumbed to five turnovers in the steady Miami downpour, losing 29-17. Despite the heartbreak, the 2006 team left an indelible legacy, heavily defined by Hesterโs historic rookie campaign where he set an NFL record with six special teams return touchdowns in the regular season, earning First-team All-Pro honors alongside kicker Robbie Gould.
