Season Review
Chicago Bears 2000
Entering the 2000 season, head coach Dick Jauron's Chicago Bears were attempting to escape mid-90s mediocrity. The front office fortified the defense in free agency with end Phillip Daniels and cornerback Thomas Smith, but the dynamic shift arrived in the draft with linebacker Brian Urlacher and safety Mike Brown. Facing an uncompromising schedule, Chicago stumbled out of the gate with four straight losses and finished last in the NFC Central at 5-11. Though missing the postseason for a fifth straight year was disappointing, the record masked a fundamental roster transformation taking root.
Chicago's offense sputtered throughout the year, ranking 28th in points scored with 216 (13.5 ppg) and 23rd in total yards gaining 4,541. Second-year quarterback Cade McNown started nine games, managing just 1,646 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and nine interceptions for a 68.5 rating. Shane Matthews added 964 passing yards across five starts. The lone offensive bright spot was running back James Allen, who racked up 1,120 rushing yards and 291 receiving yards. Wideout Marcus Robinson led the receiving corps with 55 catches for 738 yards and five touchdowns before injury shortened his season.
Defensive coordinator Greg Blache fielded a unit that ranked 16th in yards allowed and 20th in points allowed (22.2 ppg). Everything clicked when rookie Brian Urlacher stepped in at middle linebacker, spearheading the defense with 124 total tackles, 16 tackles for loss, and eight sacks. Rookie safety Mike Brown added 102 tackles and a pick-six, pairing with Tony Parrish who had 86 tackles and three interceptions in the secondary. Up front, free-agent addition Phillip Daniels led the D-Line with six sacks, complemented by Bryan Robinson's 4.5 sacks and DT Jim Flanigan's four sacks.
The 2000 campaign featured surprisingly competitive dogfights. After an 0-4 start, Chicago earned its first win in Week 5 with a 27-24 surprise victory over Green Bay at Lambeau Field. In Week 10, the Bears knocked off Indianapolis 27-24 behind an opportunistic defense. A gritty 13-10 victory over Tampa Bay in Week 12 showcased Blache's defense, holding the Buccaneers to 225 total yards and only 60 passing yards. Closing with a 23-20 road win against Detroit in Week 17, Chicago proved it could battle contenders despite enduring five single-possession losses.
A 5-11 finish kept Chicago out of the playoffs again, but 2000 established a foundational identity. Brian Urlacher captured AP Defensive Rookie of the Year honors and earned a Pro Bowl selection, becoming the instant face of the franchise. Coupled with Mike Brown's standout rookie year, this draft class created the core for Chicago's shocking 13-3 division title run in 2001. The 2000 season served as the crucial bridge that transformed a rebuilding squad into a defensive powerhouse.
