Season Review
New England Patriots 2005
Entering the 2005 campaign, the New England Patriots were carrying the heavy burden of trying to secure the first three-peat in modern NFL history. Fresh off back-to-back Super Bowl titles, Bill Belichick faced significant coaching upheaval after losing defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis to head coaching gigs. Free agent additions like receiver Tim Dwight and linebacker Monty Beisel were brought in to plug holes, while the front office bolstered the trenches by taking guard Logan Mankins in the first round of the draft. Despite navigating a brutal wave of injuries, the battle-tested Patriots finished with a 10-6 record and secured their third consecutive AFC East division crown.
With the ground game hampered by injuries to veteran running back Corey Dillon, the offense pivoted into a pass-heavy attack centered on the right arm of Tom Brady. The 28-year-old quarterback put together a brilliant campaign, pacing the league with 4,110 passing yards to go along with 26 touchdowns, earning Pro Bowl honors and a spot on the All-Pro second team. Deion Branch emerged as the primary aerial weapon, hauling in 78 receptions for 998 yards, while David Givens contributed 738 yards of his own. Mankins provided immediate stability on an evolving offensive line, helping New England finish 7th in total yards and 10th in points scored (23.7 ppg) across the league.
Defensively, the Patriots regressed, dropping to 17th in points allowed (21.1 ppg) and 26th in total yards. The secondary suffered devastating attrition, losing key defensive backs Rodney Harrison and Randall Gay to early season-ending injuries, which forced cornerback Asante Samuel into a heavy workload. Up front, defensive end Richard Seymour missed a stretch of games but still made the Pro Bowl, while nose tackle Vince Wilfork anchored the interior. Linebacker Rosevelt Colvin stepped up with a team-high 7.0 sacks, while veteran linebacker Mike Vrabel paced the defense with 108 combined tackles and even added three receiving touchdowns in short-yardage situations.
New England’s season was defined by wild, turbulent swings rather than their usual regular-season dominance. A devastating 41-17 blowout loss to the San Diego Chargers in Week 4 was followed by a mid-season 40-21 thumping by the rival Indianapolis Colts, exposing a defense that struggled to generate takeaways. However, the season flipped on its axis when emotional leader Tedy Bruschi made a miraculous return to the field in October, just eight months after suffering a stroke. Bruschi's return sparked a late-season surge where the Patriots won six of their final eight games, including back-to-back blowout wins against the Buffalo Bills and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The late-season momentum carried into the Wild Card round, where New England dismantled the Jacksonville Jaguars 28-3. However, the historic run finally reached its expiration date in the Divisional round against the Denver Broncos at Invesco Field, where a crushing five-turnover performance sank the Patriots in a 27-13 defeat. The loss snapped Brady and Belichick’s historic 10-game postseason win streak, marking their first playoff defeat as a duo. Despite falling short of another Lombardi Trophy, the 2005 squad cemented its place in franchise lore through sheer resilience, highlighted by Bruschi earning NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors.
