Season Review
San Francisco 49ers 2019
The 2019 San Francisco 49ers season was a masterclass in the 'worst-to-first' narrative, as Kyle Shanahan finally saw his vision manifest into a 13-3-0 powerhouse. After a 4-12 campaign the year prior, expectations were modest, but the arrival of Nick Bosa and the return of a healthy Jimmy Garoppolo flipped the script, leading the Niners to the top seed in the NFC West. The offseason was defined by aggressive building, including the trade for pass rusher Dee Ford and the drafting of eventual stars like Bosa and Deebo Samuel. It was a dominant regular season that felt like a runaway train, eventually steamrolling through the NFC playoffs all the way to a Super Bowl LIV appearance in Miami, marking the franchise’s return to the elite tier of the NFL.
Offensively, the 49ers were a multi-headed monster that finished 2nd in the league in scoring with 479 points (29.9 ppg). Kyle Shanahan’s zone-run scheme was a nightmare for coordinators, ranking 2nd in rushing yards (2,305) behind a committee of Raheem Mostert, Matt Breida, and Tevin Coleman. Jimmy Garoppolo proved he was more than a 'game manager,' throwing for 3,978 yards and 27 touchdowns with a highly efficient 69.1% completion rate. While George Kittle remained the gravitational force of the unit with 1,053 receiving yards, the mid-season acquisition of Emmanuel Sanders and the emergence of Deebo Samuel (802 receiving yards, 3 rushing TDs) gave the passing game the vertical threat it desperately needed to balance the 4.6 yards-per-carry ground assault.
On the other side of the ball, the 49ers’ defense was the primary reason opposing coaches spent their Mondays looking for new jobs. Ranking 1st in passing defense and 2nd in total yards allowed, this unit was built on a historic pass rush. Nick Bosa’s Defensive Rookie of the Year campaign (9.0 sacks, 16 tackles for loss) combined with Arik Armstead’s career-best 10.0 sacks and DeForest Buckner’s interior dominance made them impossible to block. Behind that front, Richard Sherman regained his All-Pro form, leading a secondary that allowed a league-low 2,707 passing yards. The defense was the team’s identity, characterized by a physical, downhill style that specialized in forcing turnovers and making life miserable for elite quarterbacks.
The schedule was a gauntlet of 'statement' games, starting with an 8-0 tear that put the league on notice. The turning point for their national credibility came in Week 12, a 37-8 demolition of Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, followed shortly by a 48-46 shootout win against the Saints in the Superdome — a game defined by George Kittle’s legendary catch-and-run with three defenders draped over him. However, the regular season peak was undoubtedly the Week 17 finale in Seattle. Dre Greenlaw’s 'inch-short' tackle at the goal line secured the 26-21 victory and the #1 seed, effectively shifting the road to the Super Bowl through Levi’s Stadium and ending a decade of frustration in the Pacific Northwest.
In the postseason, the Niners stayed true to their identity, rushing for a staggering 285 yards in the NFC Championship to bury the Packers once again. While the season ended in a heartbreaking 31-20 loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV after a late lead evaporated, the legacy of this 2019 squad remains significant. They swept the major accolades, with Bosa winning Defensive Rookie of the Year and the team finishing with a league-high scoring differential. Beyond the stats, this season re-established the 49ers as a perennial contender, proving that Shanahan’s cerebral coaching combined with a dominant defensive front could still rule a modern, pass-heavy league.
